AMBASSADORS
Born and bred in St Andrews, ‘Niv’ has followed United all his life. Niv is extremely proud and honoured to be an ambassador of the club and volunteers by fund raising and helping with maintenance around the club. Niv is a keen golfer and enjoys the odd pint in The Keys!
Alan spent the first three years of his Junior football career with Lochore Welfare prior to signing for Donald Hutton’s Thornton Hibs in 1976 and the forceful centre forward quickly became a key player at Memorial Park. Alan joined Brian Cook’s St Andrews United during the summer of 1979 and the big striker, who excelled in the air, promptly made his debut versus Oakley United on the opening day of the ensuing season. Alan was awarded a well-deserved testimonial match against Dundee United in May 1989 and he agreed to join McArthur’s coaching staff alongside Ernie McGarr and physio Bill Fullerton shortly afterwards. Speirs thus only made 17 further appearances for St Andrews United as McArthur’s team won the East Coast Windows Cup, League Cup, Fife Cup, Cowdenbeath Cup and the Fife League
Alan helped organise some of United’s centenary events and still enjoys a soft drink in the Social Club bar from time to time as a life member!
David was born in Kirkcaldy, one week before Bill Haley and His Comets introduced the world to rock and roll music with the release of Rock Around the Clock, and he first played football at Kirkland High School. Davie then turned Junior with the newly created Leven in July 1972 and the time-served machine turner quickly became a notable figure at Linnwood Park due to his tough-tackling and wholehearted approach to defending. Davie joined Brian Cook’s St Andrews United in June 1979. The amiable yet fiercely competitive centre back subsequently made his debut in a White shirt versus Oakley United on the opening day of the ensuing campaign and he only missed four fixtures throughout the next ten months as Saints secured third place in the Fife League A Division. The reliable defender eventually hung up his boots at the age of 35 in order to concentrate upon his work as a horizontal borer then as a programmer and sales engineer with FMC and Horn Cutting Tools, whilst briefly working in Aberdeen. Davie dropped out of football as a result but keeps active by walking, golfing and fishing
Alan learned his trade as an attacking right back with St Andrews Colts as well as St Andrews United’s youth side under the management of Eric Gillespie prior to spending a brief period on the books of Balgonie Scotia Juveniles. Alan joined Moss Barclay’s St Andrews United in March 1985 and went on to make 460 appearances for the club with only Jimmy Mackie and Jock Litster Jnr, having played more games. He scored 18 goals and was considered by many as United’s best ever Right Back.
As an ambassador, Alan will help to promote St. Andrews United far and wide and play a key role in helping us raise vital funds to secure the long term future of our club
