Match Report

St Andrews United knocked Coldstream out of the League Cup at The Clayton Caravan Park Recreation Ground but the hosts were made to work all the way by the plucky borderers. With Ryan McManus on holiday in Thailand to celebrate his 30th birthday, there was a first start for young Josh Simonetti, whilst Ross Cunningham captained Saints in place of Alex McCreadie. Kyle Thomson also replaced Logan Halliday between the posts yet he didn’t have too much to do throughout the afternoon, apart from picking the ball out of his net in the 33rd minute. Thomas Grey was the scorer for the Second Division side and his team deserved to lead at the interval, having played some neat football down the Recreation Park slope.

United manager Greg Shields made two changes at the break, with Mikey Ness and Lewis Payne being replaced by McCreadie and Finlay Allan respectively. Allan was making his debut for St Andrews United and the loanee from Dundee showed why he is considered to be a good prospect at Dens Park by making a positive impact during the second half. However, Saints continued to trail Coldstream by a goal as the clock wound down and away goalkeeper Matt Hall only looked concerned on one occasion following an effort by Alex Balfour. Shields also replaced James Collins with the lively Lewis Craik in an effort to restore parity and ‘player of the season’ contender John Tod moved positions from defence to attack for the last twenty minutes. Indeed, that move caused the visiting defence all sorts of problems and Tod grabbed an assist in the 85th minute by flicking the ball towards Kyle Sneddon, who then beat Hall with a shot from the edge of the Coldstream box. That goal knocked the stuffing out of a tiring away defence and Tod took full advantage to score the winner with a great finish into the bottom right-hand corner of Hall’s net three minutes later. The St Andrews United players thus achieved the day’s main aim by reaching the second round of the League Cup
